What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a quick, non-invasive treatment used to refresh the skin. It is sometimes called a "lunch-break peel". The method gently removes the top layer of damaged skin cells by directing tiny crystals at the skin.
This exfoliates and evens out the skin's surface and stimulates a new, smoother and cleaner surface to form.
Benefits of microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion can:
- correct rough skin texture;
- improve some types of scars;
- even out uneven pigmentation and age spots;
- remove or reduce open and closed comedones;
- soften the look of stretch marks and the finest wrinkles.
By removing the top layers of the epidermis, the treatment stimulates a new surface layer to form.
Areas and skin types
The treatment is most often done on the face and neck, but it can be used on any part of the body, for example the backs of the hands. Microdermabrasion suits all skin types, whatever their oiliness, colour or age.
How many sessions you need
For the best results, one session a week is recommended during the course of treatment. The number of sessions depends on your skin and is agreed with your beautician.
What microdermabrasion can't do
Microdermabrasion improves how the skin looks, but it won't affect sagging skin, bags or deep wrinkles. Those usually need a facelift-type treatment. See HIFU lifting with focused ultrasound, or laser skin rejuvenation, which stimulates collagen without wounds.

Microdermabrasion or chemical peel?
Both treatments renew the top layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion does it mechanically, with crystals, while a chemical peel uses organic acids. If your main concern is clogged pores and blackheads, start with a cleansing facial.
